I have centos 5 vps with godaddy. I do not know what MTA is configured out of box. I assume it's sendmail. I use phpmail (no loop) to send mails to a large group. Some people will receive duplicates. In an attempt to trace down the issue, i ran 'service sendmail stop', and i can see the service is stopped.
I removed 'postfix' just to be sure, i don't have anything else there. However, i am still able to send emails from the server (i tested directly with 'mail' command line). How does that work? I asked godaddy support, they said my server uses godaddy MTA to send out email. But he won't explain how/why.
And he asked me to read on MTA in general. Can someone help me to explain why I can still send mail without apparent MTA running locally? Maybe that's why i'm getting duplicates. Thanks in advance! TrevorH - thank you so much for your reply. Here is the command list I ran.
I cannot detect any MTA, but my mail still goes out. Any suggestion what to check? If MTA is running, should it run on port 25? Will netstat -n show that something is running on 25 then?. shows only sendmail installed root# rpm -q sendmail postfix exim qmail sendmail-8.13.8-8.1.el57 package postfix is not installed package exim is not installed package qmail is not installed.
